Every body from us during his or her studying life can face a lot of problems, some of it can solve it and others can not and they are remaining could not know how to deal with it until he face it personally.
I am talking here about exam, after u finish from the exam u discover that u did a mistake in that question or u understood that question by different way.
One of our doctors has been told as that, the exam is not only questions & answers and that is it, but it is also educational, coz u discover the right after u do a mistake & learn by this way.
Why a lot of us especially to the medical students who are sitting & studying the whole year, he can understand very well & trying to be good as much as he can BUT at the end i.e. in the final exam wether theoretical or oral exam, some of the questions can not be answered approperitely on the paper or during the oral questions.
The student at that time he start to get confuse coz as u all know most of our questions are MCQs & u have to chose the best one as well as the examiners during oral exam, every one of them is giving the quession by his way although it has the same meaning and that make the student confused & so, he will give either the rong answer or the inappropriate one or he will not answer totally although the quession is very simple & the answer is written in the books & u have been red it before.
I thing this is a problem and I am sure thre is something rong.
To me or even to my colleague here as a first pach for female students in the collage, there was no body told us how can u deal with such a problem.
But with time I became more oriented to deal with and I have been started to learn from my mistakes and now I am trying to overcome it and avoid it to improve myself.
For that reason, I thought to write this thread & I would like to pass my experience to those students who just started in the clinical years or even to those who are already in it.
And I hope from the colleague if they have any additional point he feels it is helpful, he can add it & by this way we will reach together how we will improve our reading, memorizing, thinking, passing exam & keeping the information for long time to utilize it in your practice & thus become a good person in your job INSHALLAH.
1- Please concentrate, understand & memorize.
Read once, twice &3 times on different periods, then start to memorize, that will help in fixing the information in your mind.
2- Try to review it with your friend.
Believe me this is make the information more easy to stay for long time.
3- Be confidence from your answers.
Once u understand the subject very well, it will give u a confedince to discuss it with your teacher.
4- If u read a topic apply it on a patient.
For example if u red any topic e.g. Bronchial Asthma, go next day & try to search on bronchial asthma patient in the word & apply what u red in the books & discuss it with your friend or with your doctor in the bed side teaching during your cession.
Again this will fix the BA disease in your mind & even u do not need to revise it in your exam.
5- In the round, Ask, Discuss & do not hesitate.
If u have any question in the round once u r seeing the patients with the doctors, do not hesitate to ask any question related to the patient & discuss it with your doctor.
Do keep in your mind that this question is not relevant so the doctor will neglect u just go ahead and do not worry, u r learning.
6- Be with the pt. From A to Z.
If u r in the emergency room, follow up the pt from starting taking Hx, doing an exam, go with him if any invistigation is requested as CT or US...ask the doctor what management should be start, follow him in the ward if he admitted, see if he is improving or not..
At the end u will find yourself that u have been red a complete topic from the book starting by Hx, Ex and ending by management, but this time u saw it personally on real patient.
Again, if u did so, no need to study it in your exam coz u r already saw & understand the subject & of course what u see not as what u read.
7- Have a good On Call.
The more cases u see it on your on call, the more experience u will get, a lot of topics in our exam could be not red yet coz of very long subject & can not be fineshed, & it does come in the exam & u can answer sometimes by seeing the patients in your on calls.
8- Do not be restricted on your book.
Your theoriticall as well as oral exam will be exactly from your books but I am sure that some of the students will do a mistake although they know the correct answer.
I think that the problem here is not in the book but in the way how to read the question and understand it i.e. different ways to write a question can lead to one answer & same answer, while the student on the exam paper he will answer immediately what he understood from the question as if it is a direct question but in facts it is a not, & by this way he will answer the wrong one.
Same thing in the clinical exam when the examiner ask a question by his way not by the books way & that make the student confuse although the answer could be very simple one...SO, WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
a. Please to read MCQs books to see different levels of questions, these books available in the libraries.
b. Use simple books containing Qs & As and try to recall your information from it after u have been studied the topic from your main book.
c. Believe me, small book containing the basic better than large books ( Information is diffeclt to come easy to go ).
All these make u broad how to answer what u red from the books.
9- Finally, hf u do not ask now & u r a student, so, when will u ask?
Be care , after your graduation, there will not be an excuse to u f u did a mistake.
So, do your mistakes now but learn from it better than u do it after your graduation.
That what was in my mind for the moment.
I am waiting from the others to add.
Sorry for this long thread.
With my best wishes.
