ÇáÓáÇã Úáíßã æÑÍãÉ Çááå æÈÑßÇÊå
Here I will discuss an overview of the subjects which will be taken in the 4th year. It is a guideline to the students of 4th year.
1) In the 1st semester as the new system will contain 3 subjects: Pathology (6h), Pharmacology (4h), and Community Medicine (6h).
-Pharmacology contains 4 Units, which are; Pharmacology of CVS, CNS, Endocrine and antimicrobial drugs. The subject is continuing of the one in the 3rd year but it concentrates more on the clinical diseases and the treatment of each one. The notes of Pharmacology can be downloaded from the files and presentation sections.
http://www.uqumed.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=329
They are really useful and the subject doesn’t need more than a good listening and understanding in the lecture and then reading from those notes.
-Community Medicine: a nice subject taught by Dr. Seraj and Dr. Solaiman Merdad. They give the notes of their lectures and the subject is nice and makes the student think more about his society and how to deal with the diseases among it.
-Pathology: Ok, this is a VERY long subject and needs a lot of reading and care, you will take 10 chapters and the recommended book is Robbins Basic Pathology. Also I made notes from different sources (the book and the notes of male & female sections) and can be downloaded also from the files and presentations section.

-------
I advice the students to download the notes before the lectures, and then follow with the Doctors from them. This will save a lot of your time which you will really need.
-------
During the 1st semester, the students may need to do some activities such as semenars and presentations in Community Medicine and Pharmacology. These activities will make the student learn more about how to search on looking for informations and subjects, get confedent when he present the semenar infront of his/her class and teachers, and how to work together. BUT you shouldda be careful that it won't take you and your time away from studying your main subjects.
This is a general look for the 1st term and I will continue with the 2nd term and summer term in the next times inshallah. You are welcome to any questions concerning this term.
Gog job dr.Lord
Go ahead
And best of luck

Dear, Cardiac Arrest
you really lost a Big teacher in pharmacology. Probably Dr.Osama is gonna teach you in 4th year. don't make the changing of teachers bother you, try to learn as much as you can from attending the lectures. I will continue my thread shortly inshallah

Now, after the 1st semester ends, you get most of the informations you need in the clinical subjects, especially from the Pathology. And you will shift to something totally different from what you used to do in the last 3 and half years in the medical school.
2) The second semester is much more fun and exciting than the 1st one, although you will find some difficulties at the beginning and get tired and exhausted at the end, but you will enjoy it. It contains 3 subjects; Radiology (3h), Internal Medicine (8h), and General Surgery (8h). I have to write each subject alone, because the students need to do a lot of things during each course:
-Radiology: A great useful subject taught by Dr.Saeed. He will teach you the different kinds of investigations needed in your real clinical life. Including how to read X-rays, CT Scans, MRI ….etc.
It is divided to 2 parts. 1st you will study at the beginning of the 2nd term (then you will start Medicine with good understanding of radiology). It contains the introduction to Radiology and the Radiology of Thorax and Kidneys.
The 2nd part starts at the beginning of the summer after finishing the coarse of surgery.
The recommended book is “The Diagnostic Imaging”. For this subject, you really need no more than concentration in the lecture with Dr.Saeed and little reading from the book. (By the way, Dr.Saeed is a nice Doctor and he likes to help the others and won’t mind if you asked him to repeat thusands of times during the lecture only to insure that you understand the subject clearly).
Next inshallah, I will start discussing the remaining two courses for the 2nd semester, Medicine and Surgery. If anybody got qestions about what I mensioned before, he/she is welcome to ask.

Thank you for presenting and particepating me my friends, I wish from Dr.Wrood, Dr.Perfecta, and Dr.MAJ to give me their comments and advices.
Dear brother Cardiac Arrest;
I am so glad to see you active and interrested, your questions will be answered as follow;
1- Radiology part 1 will take 2 week, day for boys and the next for girls alternatively, at the end of those 2 weeks you will have a mid term exam.
2- part 2 is 2 weeks in the summer, and you study the radiology of GIT and bones. at the end you will have the final exam on the 2nd part only.
3- I will appreciate your work if you put a picture of the book in your thread brother.
I hope I answered your questions clearly. cause I will move on to a big course which is Medicine.
Keep in touch.

Now after the 2 weeks of radiology, you will start your clinical subjects with Internal Medicine. Well, the entire system will be changed on the students and they have to prepare and regulate themselves for it so early, because it is only 6 weeks and the teachers expect from the students that they will get self learning. Don’t worry; it’s not difficult as soon you as know the steps of your way through the course program of Medicine.
I will talk about 3 main points here:
1) The course and its teachers.
2) The books recommended for studying.
3) The way of studying during this course.
1st; the course is 6 weeks long, 4 weeks and then the midterm exam which is out of 40 MCQs, and after 2 weeks the finals (60 MCQs and 2 short cases out of 50 marks).
The course teachers are: Dr.Abdulsalal (chairman), Dr.Abdullah Marzoqy, Dr.Mohammad Noor Hariri, Dr.Kamran Hameed (course coordinator), and Dr.Ashraf warsy. At the level of 4th year the students are supposed to know how to do the following;
-Take a correct & complete medical history (Hx) from the patient.
-Know how to do a complete physical examination (Ex).
-Know the informations of the diseases and arrange them in his/her mind.
The first 2 are the most important for 4th year level.
2nd; the books which are recommended for studying this course are shown in this thread;
http://www.uqumed.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2938
Most of the students read from Talley the Examination and the important points of history taking, and from the Pocket of Kumar for the lectures. There is also the Oxford handbook of Medicine which is a good one to be in your pocket in the hospital.
3rd; the course needs 2 main things from the students;
-His/Her skills with patients, how to ask questions, how to be polite and confident, how to present the case infront of your teacher and colleagues….etc.
-His/Her knowledge (and this comes with continuous reading and from presenting the bed side teachings).
To improve your skills, you need to take as much cases and Hx as you can, and be systematic during asking questions to the patient so that you won’t miss up anything.
From Talley; read the chapters of history and physical examination (introduction) and then start to read about each system one by one. The most important systems you need to read from Talley are: CVS, GIT, and Respiratory. CNS is better to be studied from Barbra Bate’s. It’s better (from my openion) to start with the CVS and then the Respiratory, GIT, and CNS.
Davidson is a very nice and useful book to study the for the lectures, but (to be honest) I didn’t read from it at all.
This is an overview of the course of Internal Medicine for the 4th year. If there are any questions you are welcome to ask, I tried to give the new students a brief idea to know how to start without the difficulties which we have faced. There are a lot of things which be learned by the students by the time.
I will start talking about surgery soon inshallah.
Wish you all the best.

Thank you Dr.Wrood.
It's my pleasure to write and try to help our students. I hope they get benefit from these overviews to get started.

After the end Medicine course, you will shift directly to General Surgery. It will be a bit easier since you got used to know how to take the medical history and do proper examinations. The course is 6 weeks long, with shifting among 3 different hospitals, 2 in Makkah and 1 in Jeddah (could be National Guard Hospital or King Fahad Generalized Hospital).
Actually the coordinators of this course will discuss with you everything since the 1st day.
-The course teachers are:
*Dr. Mohammad Sindy (Chairman).
*Dr. Ahmad Badreeq (Course Coordinator).
*Dr. Albaqer Alfaqy (Course Coordinator).
*Dr. Solaiman Jastaniah.
*Dr. Sameer Softa.
*Dr. Jamal Hamdy.
*Dr. Mohammad Abo-Shady.
(Well, I hope I wrote their names correctly :85:).
Regarding the books and how to study from them, please visit this link:
http://www.uqumed.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2771
The course exams & marks are:
1) Midterm Exam (30 marks): 40 MCQs & 5 SAs.
2) Final written exam (20 marks): 60 MCQs.
3) Final OSCE exam (40 marks). (to get a sample please contact the moderator of files and presentations section).
4) 10 mark on general assessment (4 for the stop exam, 2 for attendance, 2 for the log book, and to for the research).
N.B; You may got really confused during choosing the best book to read. The difference b/w Medicine and Surgery in studying is the Medicine is systemic you study each system alone, but in surgery it doesn’t go systematically and may cause lot of confusing. Try to attend bedsides and lectures with clear mind and participations.
That is what in mind for the moment about General Surgery 1. I hope it was usefull.
Waiting for questions, and Good luck for all. :12:

Salam 3aliukum
Honestly I am so embarrassed by not participating earlier in such a great topic, but my summer training is taking all my time esp. after beginning in surgery department , those people love asking juniors & making us feel that we are sooooooo late in studying, but they are wonderful people since they are concerned with teaching us the best
Dr.lord , I'll tell ya the truth , while reading what you have written concerning our course , although I passed through out those things , I found them so enjoyable & clear giving third yr students a full idea of whats going on & I bet that you are doing the best favour to the next yr students so may god bless your work
I just have few comments, that is if you don’t mind
____________________________________________
the subject doesn’t need more than a good listening and understanding in the lecture and then reading from those notes.
________________________________________________
yaaah this is also my advice to 3rd yr people concerning pharmacology,, don’t let the side talk of the class pull away your attention , just try to listen , no need to write if you are bored, coz. I will be a lyre if I told you that there will be no boring moments & the course is full of information , so just try to study
even the same thing in Community, try to concentrate to understand, this will give you longstanding ability to answer exam questions.
__________________________________________________
follow with the Doctors from them
__________________________________________________
pathology course is soooooooooooo long if you are gone study it as one term, so you must prepare your notes before the lect. , minimize the lost time in gathering information & writing them , dr.lord lectures are really beneficial & a good source for studying & an advice take it from your elder sis. , no matter how much you get depressed from this looooong subject, you must give effort in it coz. It is the basis of all all all diseases in medicine & surgery & as you be older as us you will know the real benefit of this subject.
_____________________________________________
(By the way, Dr.Saeed is a nice Doctor and he likes to help the others and won’t mind if you asked him to repeat thousands of times during the lecture only to insure that you understand the subject clearly).
_______________________________________________
what dr.lord saying here is 100% right , also another advice in the hospital life , nobody is there to be responsible to teach you , you are the one that must search , so whenever you find good doctors that like to teach , just stick to them , the earlier you do so , the more information you will gain.
_________________________________________________
There is also the Oxford handbook of Medicine which is a good one to be in your pocket in the hospital
________________________________________________
I also advice my colleagues to have it , coz. 1st you need a pocket book to read from in rounds , 2nd it organization is good giving ya the most imp. Stuff in a good order.
Thank you for being patient & tolerating my long talk, but just wanna let our younger brothers & sisters learn from us without passing through what we have passed, wishing you all the best summer ..

You did a nice job, thank you so much for joining us and helping me with your comments. Really I felt that your comments filled out the blanks in my topics.
I'll add few things concerning the summer term soon inshallah, and I need to know if anyone have questions about the last topics which I didn't explain to tell me so I can edit them.

Hello
You are the most welcome Ï. ãÜíÜÓ
and it's my pleasure to write such a thread.
for the book: Clinical Medicine for Kumar & Clark. I have them both, the pocket for my daily study and quick informations, and the big one as a refrence. about 90% of the students follow only the pocket because it's breif and gives you most of the information in a short time. actually will have much time for the big one, because you will also need to study for the physical examination from Talley or Bate's. this is my own openion and what I knew from my collegues.
Hope I could give you an answer to your question,
Good Luck!!

thank u dr lord for this great thread
i just wanted to add for ur answer for dr MIS
may be nobody agree with me except few
that i prefer Oxford Poket for medicine over kumar poket
I am saying that out of experience
walla i am thinking that Oxford Poket for Medicine is really organized and digested informatin is presented in seectioned parts
i was studying from that poket and the results was excelent al7amdu LILAH
pay it and read in it and iam sure u will not regret it
thank u

Ahleen Dr.Reda, nice to participate us
How saied that Oxfored pocket is'nt useful?? It is in my pocket during the bedsides and I read from it after I take a case. It's very well organised and so useful. My answer was just a suggestion from my openion, some students read from Davidson (sorry if the spilling was wrong), and it's acually depends on the student himself.
We get informations daily and some of them remain in our minds from the bedside teaching, although there are many books to read from!!
