Introduction:
Everybody knows that Makkah is the most important place for all the Muslims all over the world, in other words: Makkah is the place which captures the hearts of a billion Moslems all over the globe. It is the place where God's will was revealed to Muhammad, (peace be upon him), and it is now the location of the Holy Mosque and the scared Ka'ba. It is also the destination of millions of pilgrims and visitors and the holiest spot on earth.
It was also the will of God that the Holy Ka'ba be situated in Makkah. This divine will has affected the building and growth of the city as it is today.
However, this importance has developed before the Islamic story itself as you will read
Other names for MAKKAH:
God ( Allah ) has honored it in His Holy Book (Quran), in which it is given many different names, including:
Makkah
Bakkah
Al-Balad Al-Amin,
Al-Haram
and Um-Al-Qura
God also refers to Makkah in several verses of the Holy Quran using other names, and has sworn on its name, thus giving a unique status unrivalled by any other city in the world.
History:
The holiness of Makkah has begun from the time of the prophet Abraham _ peace be upon him_ when he had migrated from Palestine towards Makkah _ the valley which has no trees as it is described by the Holy Quran _ with his wife "Hajar" and their son "Ishmael peace be upon him" as the were following the instructions of Allah, after that the husband had left his wife and her son in the desert and went back to Palestine in that famous well known story
Since that time, the history of Makkah has started, Hajar and her son had adopted the place by the help of Allah and the angels, Zamzam well has been drilled, after that; the city was controlled by Jurhum tribe, then by Khuza'ah (7'uza3ah) tribe, then finally by Qurishe (8urishe) tribe from whom the prophet Mohammad peace be upon him was sent to all of the mankind.
This important action which was before 1437 years is responsible for the strong relationship between Muslims and this city.
It was in and around Makkah that the early Moslems launched their "Jihad" (Holy Struggle) against polytheism, heresy and idolarty. It was here that God gave victory to His Prophet and his fellow-believers when they triumphantly entered Makkah in the 8th year after Hijra (630 AD), ending the state of polytheism and exalting the name of Allah, the one and only God. The idols were destroyed, God's House was purified and Makkah became a secure and sacred city. Moslems all over the world turn their faces in prayer five times ad day towards the Ka'ba in Makkah and begin and end their pilgrimage with a "tawaf" (circumambulation) of it.
Geography:
Makkah is at the intersection of latitude 21 to 25 degree north and longitude 39 to 49 degree east. It is set in a rugged landscape consisting mostly of solid granite, with rocks sometimes reaching 300 meters (1,000 feet) above see level.
The city is enclosed by the Valley of Abraham, which is surrounded by two nearby mountain ranges to the east, west and south. The northern range comprises the Al-Falaq and Qu'aqi'an mountains, while the southern range consists of Abu Hudaidah mountain to the west, Kuday to the south and Abu Qubais and Khindimah to the south-east.
There are three main entrances to Makkah: Al-Mu'allat (also known as Al-Hujoon), Al-Musfalah and Al-Shubaikah.
It is generally agreed that Al-Mu'allat includes all areas which are higher than the Holy Haram and Al-Musfalah covers all areas that are lowers.
sight seeing:
Nowadays, there are many places in the city which are related to Islam strongly such as :
1- The Kaabah (Al Ka3bah) which was built by 2 great prophets "Abraham and his son Ishmael peace be upon them.
2- The holy mosque which surrounds the Kaaba
It is a greatest mosque in Islam
One pray in this mosque equal to 100000 ones in other normal mosques.
And nowadays its capacity reaches to about 1000000 persons
2- The place of prophet Mohammad birth _ peace be upon him_.
3- Hera'a cave (7era4) where the Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him was praying Allah
This is a small cave in Al-Noor Mountain , you need 45 min to climb that mountain to reach the cave.
5_ Al-thoor cave : where the prophet and his friend "Abo Bakr Al-Seddik" disappeared from the enemies during their migration from Makkah towards Madinah.
6- Zamzam well:
A great well in the holy mosque which was drilled before thousands of years by the angels for Mrs Hajar and her son to drink from.
7- The black stone ; a holy stone from Harven which is suspended on one corner of Al-ka'aba.
8- Arafat, Muna, Mozdalifah; some special places ourside Makkah which have a special importance during Hajj "pilgrimage"
