INTERNSHIP ROTATIONS & HOSPITALS
asalam 3alaikom

one of the first dilemma u will face postgraduation is how to choose ur internship rotations
i think it is really important to know about each hospital, pros and cons, before u choose ur rotations, 2 make ur internship as much enjoyable and beneficial as it should be, all what i write here is my own opinion, if anyone has other opinion, we can share it together in this thread

1- KING FAHAD ARMED FORCES HOSPITAL - JEDDAH
i took my medicine rotation in KFAFH, it was nice and tough, working hours from 7:30am to 5pm, morning meeting lasts about 1 hour, oncalls about 1/4 or 1/5, so u will end up with 6-7 oncalls/month,usually there r 10 -12 intern per rotation, there r 2 interns oncall everyday, one in ER, one in ward, if u r n ER,u can present the cases in morning meeting, only on sunday and tuesday, admissions n medicine ranges from 5-15 pt daily, u will have bleep only in ur oncall time then u give it to the intern oncall next day, they have very high-tech lab and radiology computer system, very well organized hospital
the only problem is that they dont have all subspecialties in medicine e.g. hematology, rheumatology, and also u cant take cardiology under medicine, u can only take it as elective month in the CCU

intern coordinator Dr.Murtuza Khan, endocrinlogist

contact no. 026653000 ext. 3059 Medical Education Center

surgery is not good in KFAFH as i heard from my colleagues there, pediatrics is good but i dont know much about it, OBG in KFAFH is not good if u r interesting in OBG

2- KING KHALID NATIONAL GUARD HOSPITAL
medicine here is very good, the working hours 8am-6pm,
oncalls about 5 per month, u will be in Continuous Teaching Unit CTU in the first month, then u can choose other subspecialties in next 2 monthes, they have almost all medical subspecialty, u will be given bleep from the first day, it will be with u throughout ur rota, they have a good lab computer system but no radiology computer system, overall my colleagues impression was good but i dont have personal experience

surgery in NG is good, very well organized, u will see some major and complicated operations and there r good teaching activities, but it is not very busy hospital, u will not see 3 or 4 appenidicitis admissions daily, like in other MOH hospitals, and the residents there r fighting for any simple procedure, or operation, u will not have the chance to do all the procedures and practice the surgical skills, and everything should b co-signed by residents, but overall it is good for learning ur basic surgical knowledge

pediatrics in NG is good also, u can see some of the complicated cases esp. oncology, and the dept. is very nice to prepare u for ur residency

OBG in NG is one of the best, u will learn all the basic knowledge and surgical and operatin ur rotaive skills in ur rota, u will get exposure to labour room where u can learn episiotomy and normal delivery procedures, then u will take gyne then obstetrics rota each one for 2 weeks, then u will take 2 weeks in gynecology oncology where u will learn a lot about oncology cases, oncalls are 4-6/month, u can enjoy ur rota there and there are many teaching activities for residents and interns, and the dept. is considered one of the best OBG dept in western region

contact no. 02624000 ext. 2774 academic affairs

3- KING FAHAD GENERAL HOSPITAL - JEDDAH
surgery here is very nice, u can practice the surgical skills with the residents who r very cooperative, u will have 5-6 oncalls, 2-3 interns oncall daily, u can divide the shifts, the working hours 8am - 3pm, u will have seminars and teaching but not that much, they r not very tough, in general a good hospital for exposure of huge amount of cases and practice surgical skills, most of the time u will have at least 1-2 apendicitis cases per day.

medicine in KFGH is not as strong as KFAFH and NGH, but still u will have a good number of cases, and they have seminars for interns, they have about 30 interns per rotation, so u will not have too much work

4- KING ABDULIAZIZ UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
u can call the secretary to check for positions during the time of ur rota, the best dept. there is OBG, surgery is also good, according to my colleagues there

5- KING ABDULAZIZ (ALMA7JAR HOSPITAL)
if u want to be a surgeon, this hospital is the best for u, u will have a good exposure for trauma cases and u will practice all surgical procedures and skills with good residents

6- ALNOOR SPECIALIST HOSPITAL - MAKKAH
medicine here is good but not the best
surgery is very good if u r interesting, u will be flooded with a lot of cases for clerking and presentation in meeting and rounds, but u will learn, if u r not intersting u will not like it
pediatrics dept in alnoor is good, many cases and many nice senior doctors, but not too much work
OBG is good in alnoor, u can see cases and practise, but there other better hospitals if u r interesting

7- ALZAHER HOSPITAL - MAKKAH
most of u know this hospital, i think surgery here is very good because of a lot of cases, u can do many operation especially in oncall time
medicine here is also good but not well organized

8- ALSHESHA HOSPITAL - MAKKAH
i dont have idea, but if u r interesting in trauma cases, i thing u will see enough in surgery there, also there r some cooperative senior doctors
medicine here is not the first choice if u r interesting

9- MCH - MAKKAH
OBG there is good for the number of cases, but not very good in teaching and interns activities

some advices:
-if u r interesting in one rota, dont take it in summer holiday because most of the consultants r in leave, also dont take it in Ramadan, especially surgery because there r no elective admissions
-try to take the rota u r interesting in during the first months so u r fresh and enthusiast, and keep the elective rota for the last months so u can choose the specialty u will specialize in and be ready for the residency
-take different rotations in different hospitals so u know the environment and systems of the hospitals
-get use of ur internship, u have no responsibility and u r a doctor, behave like a real doctor, have ur own impression and plan for each patient u see, discuss it with ur senior, do and participate in all procedures and operation u want, do ABG, catheters, NGT, ascitic tap, chest tubes......etc. under supervision of ur senior
-some of the specialty u may not have the chance to practice it again in ur future, try to know at least the basic of that specialty which will make u a good doctor, u may also find urself interesting in that specialty
-use ur pocket pc or palm, they r very helpful especially during oncalls, be always uptodate and have interenet access from ur pocket pc, one of the very good books is internal medicine oncall by skyscape, u can download it from the website but u have to register for free and u should have the crack from the CD:
http://www.skyscape.com/estore/Prod...?ProductId=1671

these r some of advises i think u may need, many of the colleagues were asking about the best hospitals for each rotation so i prefer to put my opinion here so u might find it useful, and please if u can add more or modify some of these, u can post ur suggestion
hope u all the best in ur future
enjoy ur internship

salam

Yes ,,, really

It is a very nice & important topic

Try to get a benefit from it

A message for the whole house officers

Try to get the maximum benefit from your rotations

Even if you are not interested in one rotation

You will observe the difference later on

When you are becoming a resident & a responsible physician

And u will be under a lot of situations >> can`t be managed properly unless you have the basic experience in your internship rotations ..

Thanx a lot dr.zizo for your topic

HI THERE

CARDIAC ARREST
U R MOST WELCOME MY DEAR, HOPE U GET BENEFIT FROM THAT, AND F U HAVE ANY QUESTION U R MORE THAN WELCOME

MAJ
THANK U FOR UR SUPPORT,
U R ABSOLUTELY RIGHT (Try to get the maximum benefit from your rotations Even if you are not interested in one rotation), I KNOW ONE OF MY COLLEAGUES, HE WAS INTERESTING IN PEDS, BUT BECAUSE HE TOOK HIS PEDS ROTA N ONE NOT VERY GOOD HOSPITAL, HE WAS DISAPPOINTED, AND ULTIAMTELY HE LOST HIS INTEREST IN THAT SPECIALTY, SO IT IS ALSO THE OTHER WAY ROUND, EVEN F U R NOT INTERESTING N A SPECIALITY FOR NO REASON APART FROM WHAT U HEARD ABOUT IT, U MAY FIND IT REALLY INTERESTING F U PRACTISE IT IN THE RIGHT WAY AND N THE RIGHT PLACE
THANX AGAIN

Dr.wrood2004
THANX FOR UR INFORMATIVE REPLY
I GUESS U HAVE TAKEN UR INTERNSHIP IN NGH, SO U MAY HAVE BETTER JUDGEMENT THAN ME (I ONLY TOOK MY OBG ROTA THERE), AND AGAIN U R RIGHT, ALTHOUGH SURGERY ROTA IN NGH MAY NOT B A GOOD CHANCE TO PRACTISE THE SURGICAL SKILLS, NGH IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST TEACHING HOSPITALS IN THE WESTERN REGION, IF NOT THE BEST AT ALL
THANX AGAIN

do u have any idea about internship in hospitals outside eastren region?
MCH Jeddah? Ajyad Hodpital?

This year i heared from 6th year that NGH(KKNGH) will not accept intern for specific period, they say you should do a full internship at NGH.. you can not do some rotations
i dont know why they do this

Other good news that you can do internship at KFSH&RC Jeddah
The best thing there is that you can drink starbucks daily :o: (i read it in a newspaper) there is agreement betn university & KFSH

can i take my elective (1 month) at a subspeciality area?
for example: Infertility & In Vitro Fertilization Unit?

Cardiac Arrest, the hospitals outside WESTERN region also can accept u, but i think u have to spend at least 2 months in western region, i remember one of the colleagues wanted to take his internship in eastern region, so Dr.Suliman asked him to take at least first 2 months in Makkah, then he can go wherever he wants, and he did that

You can take for example in KFSH in Riyadh, but u have to contact the academic affairs in the hospital, once they accept u, then u can ask the clinical affairs n the college to send an official paper

There r 2 MCH hospitals in jeddah, aziziah hospital and mesa3deya hospital, some of the colleagues took the rota there, i think they r almost the same, like MCH of makkah, jarwal

Regarding Ajyad hospital, honestly i dont have any idea about it, but it was not included in the form of internship rotations given for sixth year students, may b they dont accept interns?:?: i hope if anyone has experience to tell us about that

For NGH & KFSH, i think u can take ur elective in any subspecialty u r interesting in, but again u have to contact the department urself

NGH prefer u take whole year with them, so it is easier to organize all the interns rotations, those who take whole year have the priority first, then if still there are vacancies, they can accept thoses who want to take only one rotation, u just keep calling them, 026240000 ext. 2774, they have a weird secretary, she will accept u if u insist and call her many times

7abebe reda0007, wallah u r the great, hope u all the best in ur medicine
:D: rota, take care and prepare urself for the enjoyment of ur internship

dr.mind0007, magic. 3losh u r welcome, am so glad u found it useful, hope u all the best
brunette: MCH almsa3deya is one of the MOH hospitals, so there is no special activities or teachings for the interns, so if you want to take a rest go there, but if you want to work hard you may not find an encouraging environment for that, so if you like OBG or Pedia, i dont think Almsa3deya is a good choice for you, think about national guard or king faisal specialist hospital, or even university hospital, but if you want FALLA u may like it, or otherwise tell me what u exactly want from ur rotation and i will tell which hospital is better for u.

can I ask?
the choice about the rotations depend on what?
is it our's or depeding on the average & the marks ?

zizo
06-25-2007, 06:44 PM
my dear, at the end of 6th year in medicine, they will give you a paper to choose your rotations in your internship year and also your hospitals, you can choose whatever hospital you want, without any relationship to your marks or grade, but after you choose, it should be confirmed by Dr.Ameen in clinical affairs, then you can start, but only SOME hospitals you will need to contact them yourself like for example: King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah or Riyadh, and also University Hospital in Jeddah, I hope i answered your question, if you have any more inquiries you can ask any time.

is there any priority for those trained in national guard hospital to be accepted in their hospital?

alaneq

also, i have another question.
what about elective period in national guard hospital ? is it only one month and the other month obligatory to do either ER or PHC?

I think the answer is generally "yes"
if you did summer training in NGH or worked with them and you proved that you are a hard worker student, definitely you have the priority especially if you made good connections, sort of Was6a..
and regarding the elecetive, I think you can take it wherever you want in any specialty, just get the acceptance from the department and the consultant you will work with, but I dont really know if you can take ER or PHC in NGH, call the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs Dr Mazin Daghestani and make sure about that

Good luck

you can find these information in the Sauid Council for Health Specialties website here

Sapphire
welcome my friend, it is never silly, if u dont know u should ask!
I'll try my best to answer ur questions

1- I think u can do ur internship in Jeddah/Makkah, but u should do that under supervision of the university i.e King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah or Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah, I know that in Makkah, this goes through the Deanship of Hospital affairs in Faculty of Medicine
وكالة الكلية لشؤون المستشفيات
please see this link (in Arabic)
http://www.uqu.edu.sa/news/ar/2463

you can contact Dr Mazin Daghistani in Makkah
وكيل الكلية لشؤون المستشفيات: د. مازن بن حسن داغستاني
http://www.uqu.edu.sa/page/ar/9347

In Jeddah, I think it would be the same, so contact the Dean of Hospital Affairs Dr Osama Rayes
http://medicine.kau.edu.sa/content.aspx?Site_ID=140&lng=AR&cid=46900&URL=www.kau.edu.sa

2- almost any certificate can be accredited by Saudi Council,
read the manual from this link:
http://arabic.scfhs.org.sa/Book/ACC/Professional_Registration_Classification_Manual_vr .6.pdf

3- I think u asking about International Elective in Saudi Arabia, i dont think there is a system for international electives here but u can do it personally, i suggest u contact the hospitals directly, or otherwise contact the university (Deanship of Hospital Affairs) to arrange for this

I hope thats helpful
regards
