Brief History

The initial growth phase of clinical laboratory instrumentation started in the early 1950s (which means 56 years ago). This period emphasized the classic techniques of quantitative analytical chemistry and manual cell counting. Training focused on the manual skills of pipetting and rigid conference to protocol. Simple photometers and PH meters often represented the only instruments in the clinical laboratories at that time. Because many laboratories still made their own reagents, PH meters were essential.
